'Firewall' with Harrison Ford at mom's house

Just got back from a very, very enjoyable evening at my mom's house.  We rented the Harrison Ford flick Firewall 'via Time Warner Cable's "Pay-Per-View" system and we really enjoyed it.

It is a non-stop action thriller in which Harrsion Ford plays a network security Guru at a bank whose identity is stolen in an attempt to coerce him into helping rob the bank that employs him as rnasom payment for his family's kidnapping.

I need to do this more often to get away from the rat race and decompress.  Recommended.

    Tired of 'Social' Networks?

Here's what Blaugh has to say about the web-craze labled 'Social Networking':

    I Hate Social Networks

    Top notch, grade lampooning.

    Tying up some loose strings

    Productive Sunday.

    Yayabo taken care of
I Finally delivered Yayabo's old PC and his music and photos backups to him after having his PC sitting in my garage for almost two months.  The trip to deliver the PC to him and then copy his music and photos backup from my external hard drive to his NEW PC took less than 30 minutes.

He paid me well for the work that I did and I am really glad I have gotten this lingering issue out of the way.

Breakfast with A.J. and some new computer speakers
After the trip to Yayabo's house, I picked up my son and we had breakfast at Spire's restaurant at the corner of Hawthorne and Manhattan Beach Boulevards in Lawndale.  Breakfast was good and after that we drove over to Comp-USA where I bought a new Logitech Z-4i Speaker system for my PC

    Office Clean-up
In the afternoon, I did something that I had been meaning to do for quite a while and took apart my PC to clean the desk and the area behind it.  While doing that, I took the time to do a little re-arranging and oved my PC from the floor up on to the desk itself.

The proceeded well and the Speaker install also proceeded without issue.

More to follow as I rebuild this PC software-wise in an attempt to dual-boot it with Ubuntu Linux.

Pleseant Saturday afternoon: Lunch at Applebee's in Orange County

Just got back from taking my son to see his girlfriend in Huntington Beach and while I was over there, I met up with my mom and sister and we had lunch at the Applebee's on Brookhurst Avenue.

Lunch was good and I returned home to wait until it was time to go up to P.V. for dinner and to play Scrabble.

Incoherent: Ted Stevens, Senator from Alaska on Net Neutrality

This is a little bit late, but Net Neutrality ranks as being one of the most important issues facing every day users of the Internet practically since the inception of the Internet itself and its direct descendant, the World Wide Web.

A serach on Google for the term "Net Neutrality" returns the following number of hits:

    Google_net_neutrality_1

    Nearly 30 million hits.

Obviously, this is a subject that has been discussed at great length on the Internet, most recently spotlighted by a rambling, incoherent, clueless screed by Senator Ted Stevens from Alaska, wherein he stood in front of Congress and lobbied against Net Neutrality.

Here is a link to the audio: Download stevens-on-nn.mp3

    To qoute Mr. Stevens:

"...There's one company now you can sign up and you can get a movie delivered to your house daily by delivery service. Okay. And currently it comes to your house, it gets put in the mail box when you get home and you change your order but you pay for that, right.

But this service is now going to go through the internet* and what you do is you just go to a place on the internet and you order your movie and guess what you can order ten of them delivered to you and the delivery charge is free.

Ten of them streaming across that internet and what happens to your own personal internet?

I just the other day got, an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why?

Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the internet commercially.

So you want to talk about the consumer? Let's talk about you and me. We use this internet to communicate and we aren't using it for commercial purposes.

We aren't earning anything by going on that internet. Now I'm not saying you have to or you want to discrimnate against those people [¿]

The regulatory approach is wrong. Your approach is regulatory in the sense that it says "No one can charge anyone for massively invading this world of the internet". No, I'm not finished. I want people to understand my position, I'm not going to take a lot of time. [¿]

They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the internet. And again, the internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a truck.

    It's a series of tubes.

And if you don't understand those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and its going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.

Now we have a separate Department of Defense internet now, did you know that?

    Do you know why?

Because they have to have theirs delivered immediately. They can't afford getting delayed by other people.

    [¿]

Now I think these people are arguing whether they should be able to dump all that stuff on the internet ought to consider if they should develop a system themselves.

Maybe there is a place for a commercial net but it's not using what consumers use every day.

It's not using the messaging service that is essential to small businesses, to our operation of families.

The whole concept is that we should not go into this until someone shows that there is something that has been done that really is a viloation of net neutraility that hits you and me.

That someone like this, who is basically a paid spokesperson for the Telecomm industry, is the point person arguing against Net Neutrality is simply terrifying to me.  It really is.

And to further complicate things, I suspect that 99% of the people on the street whom you ask about Net Neutrality would just blink at you and say "what the hell are you talking about?"

    *Sigh*.

Anyways, below are a list of sites you can go to to learn more about Net Neutrality:

Go there today and educate yourselves and write to your senators.  Get involved before it's too late!

    Laptop rebuild continues apace

The software rebuild of my Fujitsu Lifebook E2010 notebook is almost complete.  Tonight I installed Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Frontpage 2003 and Microsoft OneNote 2003.

I am being really careful about what gets installed where, what applets are being started automatically and what apps I allow to litter shortcuts icons on my deskotop and in the Quick Launch toolbar.  So far, I am very pleased with the results and the laptop seems to be snappy in general use and quick to shutdown also.

Save for a few other Firefox extensions and another couple of programs, this adventure is nearing its completion.

More to follow as I tie up all of the loose strings...

    More California Heat Issues

    From the Daily Breeze newspaper:

    POWER DRAIN
Heat wave pushed demand for energy to a record, but business and government
reductions averted need for rolling blackouts.

    The Associated Press

SACRAMENTO -- The death toll from a scorching heat wave continued to rise Monday and record demand pushed the state's energy supply to the brink, but reductions in electricity usage by government agencies and businesses averted the threat of rolling blackouts.

Local authorities said they were investigating at least 29 possible heat-related deaths, most in the sweltering Central Valley where temperatures reached 115 degrees over the weekend.
